Senior Software Developer (C)

We are looking for an experienced software developer to join our team based in Basingstoke.

This role’s initial focus is developing and improving code in our products that are deployed on-street. These handle the real-time data exchange between our central Traffic Management Systems and numerous roadside traffic light controllers. The primary programming language is C, so you must be highly proficient in this language and produce high-quality code with minimal supervision. The software runs on Linux. You should also be able to perform code reviews and provide helpful feedback or mentoring to other team members.

The software manages communications and the control of traffic lights in real-time. There is also a browser-based user interface that uses PHP, Ajax and JavaScript. The software can run in a Docker container, so experience of containerisation and virtualisation would be useful. An understanding of TCP, UDP and IP is essential.

Previous experience with traffic or other real-time systems is desirable but not essential.

We keep our technology choices under constant review, and as a Senior, you will contribute to that process. An active interest in emerging languages and technologies is therefore highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Science 2:1 or above, or equivalent qualifications or experience. Significant experience of working on collaborative software projects (either professionally, academically or as part of an open-source community) is essential.

You must be a good communicator with the ability to articulate and explain your technical work both verbally and in writing. You must also be a problem solver, with the ability to convert a user story into code or a bug report into a fix. You should be competent in the fundamentals of software design – able to go from a blank sheet to a viable design and explain the choices you have made. You must be confident dealing with suppliers, partners and customers.
